Patrick Babbitt

Patrick Patrick Babbitt, Class of 2014

Last spring I spent four months in Cairo, Egypt, as a study-abroad, non-degree student at the American University in Cairo. I lived in Cairo on the island of Zamalek, situated in the center of the Nile River. Each day, I rode a bus out of the city to a settlement called New Cairo, where I studied on a quiet campus. At AUC I was able to fulfill my regional concentration, taking courses in the anthropology of the Middle East, Egyptian politics, Islam, elementary Arabic, and conflict resolution. I even collaborated with an Egyptian-American student to create an ultimate Frisbee team at the University. I had a unique cultural experience and interacted with many Egyptians and other students from the region. I left AUC with new experiences and yet another perspective, as well as a bunch of friends from a widely misunderstood region.
