Course Withdrawal Process

Withdrawal From A Course -- points to remember

  • Prior to the last three weeks of classes, students may request withdrawal without grade penalty (W) from a course with the permission of the instructor and their advisor.
  • A student is limited to a maximum of two withdrawals (W) while completing the baccalaureate degree but may petition the Committee on Academic Standing for additional withdrawals to address significant challenges.
  • A grade of "W" will appear as part of the transcript but will not be figured in the grade point average.
  • Students receiving a grade of "W" are considered financially liable for that course. The total number of registered credits for the semester is not decreased.
  • A "W" may make students ineligible for NY State grants or participation in NCAA athletics, if they are not enrolled in at least 12 credits without the "W" course. If you are unsure if you fall into this category you should meet with a representative from Financial Aid or the coach of your team.
  • Students studying under a student visa must obtain approval from the International Student Advisor in Student Academic Services (SAS) and fall within International Studies guidelines as a full-time student.
  • Students requesting a withdrawal should not stop attending class until official action has been taken.
  • You may find the withdrawal forms on the Registrar's Online Forms page.
  • For information and help considering if a withdrawal is the appropriate decision for you, please view the Office of Academic Advising's Course Withdrawal Considerations webpage.
